                         WELCOME TO READING

This school year the class will be reading a variety of texts and learning how to apply reading skills and strategies for increased reading comprehension and enjoyment.
Ms. Powell and Ms. Fisher are both avid readers, second career teachers and artists (OK, not so much Ms. Fisher but she tries really hard and can sew beautiful quilts). They both like to talk--a lot-- so they will be introducing a stuffed toy cat named Socrates to be sure that all students participate in class discussions-- ask your students about this later.

Reeses
I was born and raised in California and moved to Atlanta in 1982.  I graduated from Emory Law School and practiced civil law, eventually working as in-house counsel for a large private adoption agency. After realizing they were never going to let me keep one of those babies, I had my own. I eventually had another baby and was widowed shortly after.
My daughters, now 18 and 24, are very tall, very beautiful, and more-than-a-little goofy. They prefer to spend their spare time driving me crazy. I also have a 11 year-old cockapoo named Reeses. He likes to sleep and to eat my food.
I spent many years as a stay-at-home mom and PTA, soccer league, and pet rescue volunteer. When my youngest daughter insisted that I would not be allowed to go to college with her, I started preparing--much to her relief--for a new career in teaching.

I love to read and spent part of this summer devouring the Hunger Games trilogy. I would find it difficult to choose a favorite book but would list East of Eden, To Kill a Mockingbird and the Harry Potter series among my favorites.
This is my third year teaching and my second year teaching with Ms. Powell.

This will be my sixth year at Elkins Pointe Middle School. I love teaching 6th and 7th grade reading.

I was born in Atlanta and live in Roswell with my two sweet cats, Luna and Isabella.

I have taught art (P-6), and, among other things, have worked in a book store, an antiques shop, with in-house catering at the Coca Cola Company, and at Arlington Cemetery in Sandy Springs.

My most recent favorite book is The Elegance of the Hedgehog. The author I reread most often is P. G. Wodehouse because he always makes me laugh. My most recent favorite movies are The Artist and Big Fish.
I just finished reading The Maze Runner (depressing) and The Wall and the Wing (fun and fantastic).

Ms. Powell and Ms. Fisher look forward to a great year with their reading classes.
